What is a Doula?

A Doula is a supportive companion (other than a friend or loved one) who is professionally trained to provide support. A Labor Doula or Birth Doula provides physical, emotional and informational support during labor. She performs no clinical tasks. "Doula" also refers to a laywoman who is trained or experience in providing postpartum care in the first few weeks after birth providing household help, advice with newborn care and feeding, and emotional support. She is often called a Postpartum Care Doula.
