Q: Why take childbirth classes?

A: My classes offer a relaxed atmosphere where women and their partners can ask questions and gather information about pregnancy. Learn what to expect during labor and delivery; i.e., comfort measures such as positioning, touch, massage, acupressure, use of birth balls. Learn about the adjustments, both physical and emotional in the postpartum period, and especially important…..how to take care of that little baby once it’s born.

Also, it’s a great support to be with other couples who are experiencing the same questions and concerns. Many, many couples have made life long friends from the classes.

Q: Does my insurance cover the classes?

A: Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Community Blue, Community Blue Advantage, etc . of WNY (with a few exceptions) cover all the classes. No co-payment.

Independent Health partially covers the classes.

A detailed receipt can be given that will allow you to submit the cost of the classes to your insurance and they may reimburse you.

Q: Do you offer a one day class?

A: No, I do not offer a one day class for first time expectant couples ( I do offer a one day Refresher class for couples having their second or third, etc. babies). I have chosen not to offer it because I do not feel that you can take in all the information you need to prepare you for birth in one 6-8 hour session. I feel that you need to hear information two or even three times in order to fully understand and learn that information. Also, the support and friendships that couples develop from attending a series is wonderful. Some lifelong friendships have been formed from the classes. It’s also great for the expectant Dads to be able to talk to other expectant Dads and compare notes.

Q: How do your classes compare... Lamaze vs. Childbirth classes?

A: I have been a Lamaze International Certified Instructor for 14 years. And although I use Lamaze as a foundation in the classes, (ie. relaxation techniques, breathing exercises and other tools), I have combined what I have learned over the years as a childbirth educator, Doula and midwife, what works and thrown out what I have found doesn’t work to make a very practical class.
